Rex W. Tillerson is CEO of Exxon, one of the most profitable (and ruthless) corporations in the world. In 1989, the Valdez, an Exxon tanker, spilled 11 million(!) gallons of crude oil into the waters of Prince William Sound in Alaska, devasting both the local economy and environment. Exxon promised the people of this community, and the rest of the world, it would act responsibly and clean up the mess they made. Thousands of people's lives have been lost or destroyed as a direct result of this negligence, and 17 years later, they still have yet to compensate the people of Alaska. The financial promises they made to clean up the habitats there have largely been oversighted. A court settlement found Exxon liable for a measly $5.3 million dollars. They quickly filed appeals that brought that figure down to about $4.5million. Last year alone, Exxon saw record-breaking profits of over $36 billion. Exxon’s Political Action Committee (PAC) and its employees have contributed $8.3 million to political and federal candidates in the last 14 years (can you say PAYOFF?) AND they have given more than $15 million to phony and junk organizations like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to undermine real strategies for alternative, cleaner energy. Wonder why the US pulled ship on the Kyoto agreement? Ask Rex, it just wasn’t in his companies interest, and after contributing over $8million to Bush and his cronies over the last 14 years, well someone owed someone a favor.
